Nebraska Prairie Chicken Hunting
Nebraska prairie chicken hunting is an extremely challenging upland bird hunt, yet the reward is well worth the effort. Though the numbers are not as plentiful as other species of upland birds found in Nebraska, the hunt is one you will not soon forget. Most die hard upland bird hunters are not hunting in Nebraska for prairie chickens in order to bag their daily limit. Rather, they are there for the unmatched raw beauty of watching their upland bird hunting dog lock up on a snout-full of prairie chicken scent, and to be steady for the impending burst of Nebraska prairie chicken from the native grasses on the prairies of Nebraska.
When you are prairie chicken hunting in Nebraska, you may be fortunate to bag one. But the purist will hunt Nebraska prairie chickens not necessarily for the freezer, but more for a trophy mount. The prairie chicken is best known for its spectacular mating behavior. Booming, as it is known as, occurs in the early morning hours during the spring. The males gather in a mating ground area, and defend this courting area by putting on a show for the females. They also make distinct mating calls-a low "whoom-whoom" sound during the displays, and a yodeling sound between displays that sounds like a turkey.
The prairie chicken is a chicken-like bird, with many dark stripes on a mostly grayish brown plumage. They have a short black tail that also has stripes on it. The male prairie chicken has yellow-orange air sacs that are inflated during the courtship display, and long black feathers on sides of neck, which are erected into "horns" during courtship. During these rituals, the males strut about and stamp their feet, with "horns" erect and their air sacs inflated on the sides of the neck. They leap and whirl in the air, and threaten each other by short runs with tail raised, head down, and horns erect.
